Spirax Sarco's new MicroTurbine range generates electrical power as a function of steam pressure reduction. By using microturbine technology to reduce steam pressure and generate electricity, a significant boost to energy efficiency can be made – resulting in financial savings.
•Lower electricity bills – generate from 50 kW of electricity from existing steam systems
•Optimise plant performance – fully utilise the steam system capacity to maximise overall plant efficiency
•Reduce environmental taxes – making better use of the available energy means a reduction in Climate Change Levy (CCL)

    How steam microturbine technology works

It is the norm to generate steam at higher pressure for distribution and then reduce its pressure for use by the application. Conventionally, this function is performed by a pressure reducing station.

Now, a more advanced method to reduce pressure has come to the fore in the shape of microturbine technology. Passing steam through a microturbine enables operators to use the energy released by the resulting pressure drop to supplement their existing electricity supply; whilst the emerging lower pressure steam is still utilised for its primary requirement.

The electricity produced in this way reduces the need for power from the grid, cutting utility bills and overall carbon emissions. The greater the difference between the price of electricity and the price of gas or oil to fuel the steam boiler, the greater the savings.

The new range of Spirax Sarco MicroTurbines are suitable for saturated or superheated steam. Their compact design makes the turbines suitable for retrofitting into many existing steam systems and they are supplied fully assembled and tested to minimise on-site disruption during installation and commissioning.
